Pre-paid funeral plans are a great way to prepare for the expense of a funeral when the time comes. As many decades may pass between making your arrangements and the service delivery, you should concentrate on the broad overview because while most companies will allow changes to be made, it will almost certainly incurr additional payments. When considering a pre-payment plan always check exactly what is included, i.e. how much of the actual funeral costs are guaranteed and what is not. It is especially important to check the position regarding disbursements such as cemetery and crematorium fees. The disbursements can easily exceed 50% of the total cost of the funeral and often rise far in excess of inflation.If you are considering burial in a new grave most funeral directors will advise you to purchase the grave in addition to taking out a pre-paid funeral plan. In many parts of the country the Exclusive Right of Burial in a grave has risen from a few hundred pounds to well over £1000 in the last ten years as cemeteries fill up. That's assuming that the cemetery you wish to be buried in has any space left. Many people don't realise that graves and crematorium memorial locations are offered on a lease basis, not "in perpetuity", so please remember to check how long the leases are in your chosen cemetery or crematorium. These usually run from the date of purchase rather than date of interment. In practice pre-paid funeral plans give peace of mind and can be good value for money, which is why over 60,000 people a year take out a plan, but this should be treated as the basic "landscape" for the funeral ceremony - it's up to you to paint in the details.
